Back To School Safety

With the opening day of school approaching, the Ottumwa Police Department is urging motorists to be extra alert during this time of year, especially around schools, bus stops, and residential areas. Drivers are reminded to:

· Slow down in school zones and residential areas;
· Obey school bus warning devices - flashing red lights and stop arms;
· Obey all traffic signs - stop signs, red lights, speed limits signs;
· Watch for clues that indicate children may be in the area - safety patrols, adult crossing guards, school buses, school zone signs, bus stops;
· Give the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing the street;
· Share the roadway with bicyclists; and,
· Buckle Up!

It is also important for students to follow proper safety precautions. Parents are encouraged to teach their children how to get to and from school safely, including:

· Knowing the route to and from school;
· Walking on the sidewalk, when available;
· When there is no sidewalk and it is necessary to walk in the roadway, walking on the far left side facing traffic;
· Using crosswalks and designated school crossings whenever possible;
· Obeying the crossing guard or safety patrol person; and,
· When riding a bicycle to school, obey all traffic laws and wear a bike helmet.

In an effort to help children travel to and from school safely, the Ottumwa Police Department will be increasing traffic enforcement during school hours around schools and residential areas. Officers will be assigned to watch for various violations, including motorists speeding in school zones, vehicles driving through school bus warning devices (flashing lights/stop arms), and non-compliance with seat belt laws.
